Sharing Experiences of Converging Cultures Along the Santa Fe Trail and the Development of Pawnee County


The purpose of the Digitization Project is to provide the public with an educational opportunity to utilize the archival collection of the Santa Fe Trail Center in relevance to the Santa Fe Trail Center’s mission statement. By employing a digitization development and cataloging program, the Trail Center will be able to provide the public with the opportunity to learn about the development of Pawnee County and early agricultural in the rural Midwest; gain an understanding of the importance of the Santa Fe Trail to United States history and the Western expansion; and the historical, cultural, and natural resource once known as the Santa Fe Trail.

Grant Information:

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in July 2008 awarded the Fort Larned Historical Society, Inc. and their partner, Pawnee County, with a Museums for America grant in the amount of $129,238.00. The IMLS grant provides the opportunity for both the Santa Fe Trail Center and the Pawnee County Courthouse to do an extensive digitization project and make known the important research materials available about he development of Pawnee County and the Santa Fe Trail.

The project entitled, “Those Who Saw: Sharing Experiences of Converging Cultures Along the Santa Fe Trail and the Development of Pawnee County,” started in the fall of 2008 and will continue over a three-year span. The project will involve digitizing 4,500 – 5,000 selected photographs, documents, and records from both locations.
