Fort Larned Historical Society to Host
Special Program
|

"Camp Concordia - A German POW Camp in Kansas" will be the program for the Fort Larned Historical Society's Annual Meeting to be held on Monday, November 9, 2009, at 7 p.m. at the Santa Fe Trail Center, Larned. The meeting are free and open to the public. Lowell May of Riley, Kansas will present the evening program. He will display a scale model of the Concordia camp which consisted of 304 buildings for a total cost of $1,808,860.00 when built in 1943. The camp housed over 4,000 WWII POW's from the German army, not all of who were Germans. The camp officially closed in 1945. May is the author of Camp Concordia: Geman POW's in the Midwest and co-author of Prisoners of War in Kansas, 1943 - 1946. He was instrumental in founding the POW Camp Concordia Preservation Society in 1998 and has served as its president. Prior to the program, the historical society's annual meeting will include an update of the museum's activities, installation of newly elected board members and the announcement of the Volunteer of the Year. The general public is welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information regarding the meeting and program contact the Santa Fe Trail Center at 620-285-2054.
